    1. Johannes Gerst, Pastor (*<1561 Münchhausen (am Christenberg), Hessen-Kassel, Germany ✝︎>1624 Husum?, Nienburg/Weser, Hannover, Germany)

Notes:
Or Matthes, Mattes, Mertens. Schoolmaster in Münchhausen (am Christenberg). Pastor in Maulbach (to which parish also Appenrod and Dannenrod were affiliated) from 1561 until 1584. He is listed in the Maulbach Ackerregister and in the Rodzinsenregister as a taxpayer in 1572 and in the Forstregister in 1580 and 1584, in the last as the old pastor. He is also listed in the 1581 document concerning the division of the Maulbach commons (Pferche). In 1583 he petitioned that Erbenhausen and perhaps also Lehrbach be added to the Maulbach parish, for his salary was too small and they had need of a pastor. In the 1587 record of property (Salbuch), he and Heintz Rupff are listed as owners of farm Nr. 1 in Maulbach.

Also resident in or near Maulbach were Peter Gerst (documented in Maulbach 1581-1587, ⚭<1575 Barb NN), Johann Gerst (documented in Maulbach 1577-1596, ⚭<1587 Barba NN), and Diel Gerst (documented 1587 in Appenrod), all property owners. It is possible that all three were sons or somehow related to Matthias Gerst, but this is unknown. It seems unlikely, however, that the Johann Gerst in Maulbach is the same person as Johannes Gerst(ius), pastor in Elnhausen 1588-1606, as the Johann Gerst in Maulbach was involved in 1596 in a suit over damage to a field in Niedergemünden, which would have been an unlikely thing for the Elnhausen pastor. It is also possible that the Elnhausen pastor was not the son of the Maulbach pastor Matthias Gerst at all.
