Paul Wilhelm Louis Eggert (*near Lyons, Burt, Nebraska, United States ✝︎Las Vegas, Clark, Nevada, United States)Notes:
He never served in the military, either in Germany or in the US. He worked in a forest near Eitzen MN for three years, where he came to know the Spannuth family. He may have lived in St. Paul briefly in 1870, as there was an August Eggert working in a lumberyard at that time. But an August Eggert was also living in St. Paul in the 1880s, so the St. Paul connection is probably incorrect.
On 6 November 1871 he filed his declaration of intent to become a citizen of the United States, in Caledonia, Houston County, Minnesota. At that time he could not sign his own name.
He moved to Burt County NE in 1871 (EE4) or more likely 1872 (FYH) and worked as a farm laborer for Waldo Lyon, for whom Lyons Nebraska was named. He was a charter member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church near Lyons, Nebraska, on 23 April 1874. He purchased his farm southeast of Lyons by grant from the US Government in 1879. This farm was on the southwest quarter of section 5, Everett Township (later Bell Creek Township), Burt County, Nebraska. He met his wife while delivering a load of grain to Norfolk Nebraska, where she worked as a waitress in a café. Their first eight children were born in the small house that was later turned into a chicken house. The remaining children were born in their new larger house on the farm. He had an extensive orchard and large garden. He raised grapes, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, many kinds of apples, cherries, plums, and apricots and peaches. His huge garden provided many vegetables for the family table. He was naturalized in 1896 (CEN1920). He also owned a farm at McLean, in Pierce County, which he sold in 1914. They moved to Lyons in May 1922 after son Herman took over the farm.
